    A temazcal is a round hut or sweat lodge made from branches, fabrics, earth, or stones.The word "temazcal" comes from the Nahuatl language and literally means "house of heat". 

  • What it's used for

    Temazcal ceremonies are used for therapeutic healing and relaxation.They can help relieve stress, aches, and injuries, cure skin or respiratory disease, and are also used during childbirth. 

  • How it's done

    During a temazcal ceremony, a bonfire is made in the center of the sweat lodge and volcanic stones are heated.A cold infusion of herbs and medicinal ingredients is then poured over the stones by candlelight. Ceremonies typically last for two or more hours and are led by a shaman or temazcalero. 

  • What to wear

    It's recommended to wear a swimsuit with a blanket or sarong to a temazcal ceremony. You should also bring light clothing to use as a blanket on the way out.
